Car-free center in Gemert

We want to make the center of Gemert more attractive by working together to create more atmosphere, experience and comfort. To get a clear picture of whether banning motorized traffic in the shopping area can contribute to this, we decided to conduct a pilot for the duration of one year.

Pilot

This pilot means that the Nieuwstraat in Gemert will be closed to motorized traffic from July 29, 2024 until July 1, 2025 and will be designed as a pedestrian-friendly zone. We think it is important to involve the surrounding area, which is why two information meetings for stakeholders and interested parties have been held before the pilot actually starts. During these information meetings, everyone was given the opportunity to ask questions and provide input.

To measure is to know

After this pilot, we will have a better idea of what a pedestrian-friendly New Street means for the center and its residents, business owners and visitors. We already have one-way traffic in the center. With this pilot, we will examine whether we can go a step further by making the center car-free.

We are carefully measuring the effects of the closure of Nieuwstraat on traffic flows, the parking situation and accessibility. We are also charting how visitors, shopkeepers, business owners and local residents perceive and experience a car-free center.
