Crisis management and disaster response
Should there be a disaster or crisis in your area, you will be alerted by the siren. The siren is tested every first Monday of the month at noon. You can also be notified via NL-Alert if you have this set up on your mobile.
Didn't hear the siren? Through the fire department's national website you can file a report if the siren did not work.
Three things to do when you receive an NL Alert
When you receive an NL-Alert, your cell phone emits a piercing alert sound. This sounds different from any other message. There are three things to do when you receive an NL-Alert:
1. Read the message immediately
If you receive an NL-Alert, do not panic. Read the message carefully and calmly. Because an NL-Alert tells you what is going on, what to do and where to find more information.
2. Follow the instructions on
It is important that you do what the message says. Even if you notice little or nothing about the emergency. During an emergency, the local safety region decides in which area the NL-Alert will be broadcast. This depends on what is going on and on the circumstances, such as the wind. Because even if you live miles away, a dangerous smoke cloud containing toxic substances can also reach your place of residence.
3. Inform others
Some people may have missed the NL-Alert. For example, because they did not have a cell phone with them, their phone was turned off or was temporarily connected to a transmitter mast that was not broadcasting the NL-Alert. This can happen to anyone. It is therefore important to also inform others when you receive an NL-Alert. That way they also know what is going on and what to do. It's better to be safe.
