Climate-proofing your home and garden

Our living environment is changing at a rapid pace: longer periods without precipitation, increasingly heavy rainfall, more violent storms and more days with tropical temperatures. We want to make Gemert-Bakel resilient to the changing climate, or climate proof. Together we can limit the effects of climate change as much as possible. To make it even easier and more tangible for residents, the municipality is working with Stichting Steenbreek. Steenbreek offers residents all kinds of tools and tips to get started. Visit the Steenbreek website at for more tools and tips.

Home and garden tips:

  • Take out the tiles, put in greenery!
  • If you do put down some tiles, choose tiles that allow water to pass through.
  • Plant more flowers, shrubs and trees or create a vegetable garden with homegrown fruits and vegetables.
  • Turn your fence into a green yard fence
  • Create shade with a parasol or sunshade
  • Disconnect rainwater from the sewer afexternal-link-icon and collect it in a rain barrel at the downspout
  • Make your garden live and give insects, birds and small animals a habitat again

Incentive schemes

The municipality has an incentive scheme for disconnecting rainwater and installing a green roof. You may be able to take advantage of this.

Do you qualify for one of these incentive grants? Then in almost all cases you also meet the water board's subsidy requirements. For more information on climate-proofing subsidies, visit the Aa and Maasexternal-link-icon website.
