Irresistible green roof on fire station in Bakel
The Brakken in Bakel regularly suffers from flooding after heavy rainfall. The municipality started to investigate which effective measures could be taken to reduce the nuisance here. Replacement of the sewers in this neighborhood is not scheduled for several years, so large-scale measures in the subsoil were not obvious at this time. Another measure was sought. Because there is a municipal building here, the fire station, we looked at what we could do with it. A lot of paved surface with rainwater flowing into the sewer system and causing nuisance in the street. That can be done differently!
It has long been our desire to start working with green roofs in our municipality. These contribute to slowing down rainwater runoff into the sewer system and also have a positive effect on biodiversity. From the fire department we were told more often that it can be very hot. A green roof contributes positively to the climate in the building because it has an insulating effect and saves energy. This green roof will not be able to completely prevent water flooding in the area because of its limited size, but it certainly contributes to less rainwater going to the sewer system.
In collaboration with Bart Rovers of Garden Design Construction and Maintenance, a timelapse was made of the construction of this green roof.
