Remodeling of Presidential Neighborhood - Gemert

The redesign of streets in the Presidents neighborhood has been underway for some time. The first streets have been repaved and the following streets are currently being prepared. Within this project, 18 more streets are due for: new sewers, paving and greenery in the coming years. The reason for this is the sewers that need to be replaced after about 60 years. This provides an immediate opportunity to address the street layout. To keep the neighborhood livable for now and the future, a new street layout is needed. After all, we are facing increasingly extreme weather and therefore more risks of flooding and heat. We therefore opt for more greenery and space for water. Rainwater can enter the ground and trees and plants provide the necessary cooling. Where possible, we involve local residents in making the plans.

Updated text: November update - modification of Drossard de la Courtstraat intersection. Earlier than planned, the President J.F. Kennedy Street - Drossard de la Court Street intersection will be closed and opened.

Highlighted text: Starting next Monday, November 11, this intersection will be closed. The intersection will remain closed until Christmas this year. An alternate route will be sought for the bus line.

Prior Jacobs Street, Prior Davidts Street and De Kieboom

As a result of the residents' evening on September 19, 2023, the design was modified and presented again on December 20, 2023. The resulting feedback has been incorporated into a final design. Tendering has now begun and a contractor will be known around the end of May to perform the work.

The preliminary schedule for the entire work is September 2024 to March 2025. A street-level schedule is being developed with the contractor, and will be known in early July. The time until the start of the project will be used to have detailed coordination with residents around green space and water where necessary.

President John F. Kennedy Street

October 2024 update: we have begun!

Work on the President J.F. Kennedystraat has started. On Monday, October 21, contractor van Doorn Infra from Schijndel started breaking open the road. The start was made on the Molenakkerstraat side.

Planning

The schedule for the reconstruction of J.F. Kennedy Street, consisting of 7 phases, has been coordinated with the contractor and below is an overview of this schedule.

October 2024 update: we are about to begin!

After a long time of preparation, we let you know in this update that work will begin on President John F. Kennedy Street and several side streets.

Shovel in the ground

Contractor Van Doorn will begin work on President John F. Kennedy Street. On Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, the first phase of this street will be closed and the contractor will start opening up the road. The first phase includes the streets: the intersection with Molenakkerstraat and the section up to and including the intersection with Rechter van Berckelstraat. From the first phase, work will be done in the direction of Burgemeester de Bekkerlaan. So we will start on the Molenakkerstraat side.

On this page you will always find the latest information on planning and progress. The entire implementation schedule will also appear on this page soon.

Accessibility

As indicated above, we are performing the work in sections. By breaking up parts of the street each time, we want to keep accessibility as good as possible, provide clarity in road closures, but also make room for the contractor. Nevertheless, accessibility to the homes will be limited during the work.

We try to limit the inconvenience to the surrounding area as much as possible. This kind of work cannot be carried out without inconvenience. We ask for your understanding.

Executive

Do you have questions or comments about the execution of the work? If so, please contact the person performing the work:

Drawings of the new street layout can be found under the April 15, 2024 update. This one has not changed.

Update April 15, 2024: The second residents' evening

On Tuesday evening, April 9, the City hosted the second residents' evening about the plans for the reconstruction of President John F. Kennedy Street. During this evening everyone's reactions to the Sketch Design were discussed. In many cases, these reactions led to adjustments in the design. The adjustments in the design were received very positively by those present. The Preliminary Design was presented and the choices made were explained. With a critical note here and there, the technical development of the design can now begin.

The most important conclusion from the two residents' evenings is the idea of establishing one-way traffic on Drossard de la Courtstraat between Burgemeester Rietmanstraat and Kennedystraat and northbound. One-way traffic on this road section contributes to traffic safety and lowering the average speed in the neighborhood. It also creates space for parking and greening. The formal process to regulate this by means of a traffic decree will be started. This will be published on our website and in the Gemerts Nieuwsblad, and the parties directly involved will be informed.

In the coming period, the final comments will be reviewed and the Preliminary Design will be further developed into a technical drawing. It is expected that the technical drawing can be shown to residents during a walk-in hour in June. Residents will receive another invitation for this information moment.

Update March 18, 2024: preparation has begun

Preparation for the reconstruction of President John F. Kennedy Street has begun. The area between Burgemeester de Bekkerlaan, Burgemeester Rietmanstraat and Molenakkerstraat will be reconstructed. Over the past period, a Sketch Design has been made for this with the principles that apply to the entire Presidential Neighborhood.

On Tuesday evening, March 12, the municipality held a residents' evening about this. The design idea, principles, planning, etc. were presented. The Sketch Design was then discussed with those present in a constructive discussion and everyone was given the opportunity to contribute ideas for improvements.

In the coming period, the comments will be reviewed and the Sketch Design will be further developed into a Preliminary Design. In April the Preliminary Design will be presented to the residents and the choices made will be explained. Residents will again receive an invitation to this residents' evening.

Surroundings Gerarduskerk and Drossard de la Courtstraat.

Stichting Goed Wonen owns St. Gerardus Majella Church and has plans to build apartments in this church. Together with a redevelopment of housing in the Drossard de la Courtstraat, Goed Wonen is currently working on the plan development in this area. In this plan development, the municipality is looking at how the streets in this area should be laid out.

This involves part of Drossard de la Courtstraat, part of Burgemeester Rietmanstraat, Judge van Berckelstraat and Griffier Corstensstraat. In the coming months, the zoning plan procedure will be worked on here in order to subsequently create the development plan for this area. At various times, there will be consultations with the residents about a new layout of the public space.

Other streets

The following streets will be replaced in the next phases within the project area Presidentenbuurt. The order is determined, among other things, by the urgency of the sewer replacement, logical procedure, accessibility of the neighborhood and connection with other work in the neighborhood.

The designs previously made and shown remain the starting point. Working out the details will take place when we have sight of the start of implementation. The residents concerned will be given access to the design well in advance of the execution of the project.

One-way traffic some streets Presidents neighborhood

With the redevelopment of the Presidents' Neighborhood, one-way traffic will be established on several streets. This measure should slow the speed of traffic in the neighborhood while providing more space for greenery while maintaining adequate parking. Formal processes (traffic orders) have been completed for the establishment of one-way traffic. The actual establishment of one-way traffic in the street is done at a natural time, for example, with the completion of the new layout of the street or after the redesign of adjacent streets.

Disconnecting rainwater

In the earlier communication we told you that we also want to "disconnect" the rainwater in the Jan van Amstelstraat and Borretstraat. Disconnecting rainwater means that we want to bring as much clean rainwater as possible that falls on the roofs of the houses via a separate sewer to the ditches and streams in the area. This clean rainwater will then no longer go to sewage treatment.

To better explain this, we have created a leaflet. You can find it below. There are no costs for the plot owner. There is even a subsidy option for owners who disconnect even more water themselves.
