Refurbishment of Valeriusstraat in Gemert

We started preparations for the redesign of the Valeriusstraat in Gemert at the beginning of this year.

At the beginning of this long-running project, we gathered information from direct neighbors and inventoried the problems in the public space. We did this by letter. We received many responses. We also informed residents about the design process and showed them what we as the municipality think about the layout of the street. We did this at a meeting on June 25 and July 2.

Global planning

We will use the next few months to prepare a sketch design of the street. This will be discussed at a subsequent meeting. After the summer, we will develop this sketch design further. The goal is to start phased implementation in mid-2025.

Meetings on June 25 and July 2, 2024

During the meetings, we provided a general explanation of the project. The reason for the project is sewer replacement and road maintenance. But we want more. This is the opportunity to look at how we can make the street future-proof, so that residents can live there comfortably again. We are thinking for example of more space for greenery, parking and water in the neighborhood.

At the bottom of this page are the presentations given at these meetings.

The trigger

On November 18, 2021, 8 residents sent a letter to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. In that letter, they described the state of public space as a construction street. As a result, a conversation took place.

Valerius Street is part of a larger redevelopment project for both sewers and roads. Its program provided for a start with preparatory work in 2021 and a projected start of physical work in 2022. It should be noted that unforeseen circumstances could lead to a reprioritization of the project and thus a possible postponement. With the start of preparations for the Vondellaan redevelopment project, residents of Valeriusstraat felt left behind. The planned approach to Valeriusstraat was briefly discussed at the Vondellaan information evening.

This was seized upon by residents to contact the municipality once again. As a result, the alderman and residents took a tour on March 3, 2022. During the tour it became clear that the condition, state and design of the public space in the broadest sense of the word is no longer up to date and, as a result, requires redevelopment.

All facets associated with the design of a road/ residential street and sewer system are included in the redesign. Here it is important to look at future developments in the immediate vicinity of the road and residential street and especially to put the public space in order. During this process, residents and other stakeholders will be informed and consulted and can make any wishes and bottlenecks known.
