Birth declaration

Instruction text: After the birth of your child, you must report the birth to the civil registry of the municipality where the child was born within 3 days. The day of birth does not count. A weekend counts as one day: for example, if the child is born on Thursday, you can still declare the child on Monday. An official holiday following the weekend counts as one weekend day. Then you can still declare a child born on Thursday on Tuesday. Make arrangements directly through the iCitizenship website.

Arranging birth registration digitally

If you still need to acknowledge the child at birth or choose a surname at the time of the declaration, we need the signatures of both parents (then you need to make an appointment for the declaration).

Important text: Please note that with the online birth declaration, you must attach a statement from the midwife or (family) physician with the place of birth and any other documents - such as proof of an acknowledgement of unborn foetus.

Who files a report?

  • The father and/or the mother.
  • Someone else who was present at the birth

If no other persons were present at the birth:

  • someone whose baby was born in the home
  • the head of the hospital or clinic where the baby was born

If there is no one to declare the child, an official of the municipality makes the declaration. The mayor appoints the official.

A birth registration can be done online and by appointment.

Declaration at the town hall

If you would like to come to the town hall to make the birth declaration, please make an appointmentexternal-link-icon.

Important text: Note: Is it not possible to file the declaration within 3 working days? Then call the phone number 0492-378500.

  • Valid proof of identity external link icon from yourself.
  • A statement (birth certificate) from the midwife.
  • Copy of the deed of recognition and/or deed of choice of name if made before birth.
  • Wedding or partnership book, so the officiant can inscribe your child in it (not required).
  • In the case of duo mothers: possibly the statement from Donor Data Foundation artificial insemination.
  • Do you still want to choose the child's last name? Then the mother must also be present at the appointment.

Processing in the basic register of persons (BRP).

With the signing of the deed, the birth declaration is a fact. The birth is then recorded in the BRP. You will receive an overview with the data of your child and a request to check the data for accuracy.

After the declaration, you will receive a confirmation of the birth declaration by mail. This will also contain your child's Citizen Service Number (BSN). We ask that you check this information for accuracy.
