Having a facade garden laid out
Having a front yard landscaped? Don't have a front garden, but would like to have one? The municipality will plant a front garden for free! Some homes border directly on the sidewalk, leaving little green space in the street. A gable garden is a small green strip against the front or side wall of a house. Because the strip is in the public space, the municipality of Gemert-Bakel takes care of the construction of the gable garden. You are responsible for its planting and maintenance.
Why does the municipality want to encourage this?
Building a facade garden offers many benefits:
- The living environment is becoming greener and healthier.
- Brightens the home as well as the street.
- Rainwater drains better.
- Plants and flowers attract all kinds of insects and birds.
- It retains less heat than tile/concrete.
Game rules:
The municipality of Gemert-Bakel will check if the public space is suitable for a facade garden. The facade garden will be a maximum of 60 cm (two tiles) wide.
- The municipality of Gemert-Bakel will take care of removing the pavement, improving the soil and placing a band around the facade garden.
- A façade garden is a loan garden and remains public land (property of municipality of Gemert-Bakel).
- The resident is responsible for planting and maintaining the facade garden.
- Various cables and pipes may be located in the ground. Dig only manually and no deeper than 30 cm.
- If the municipality needs the land to carry out works, passage will have to be granted, with no right to compensation.
- In case of neglect or non-compliance, we restore the sidewalk to its original condition.
- If your street has recently been redone (new paving/greenery/sewer installed), there is a five-year breaking ban. This means you cannot have a facade garden installed during that period. Before redevelopment, we will ask if you are interested in planting a facade garden.
