Notification of moving abroad (Emigration)

If you are going to stay abroad for more than 8 months in a year, you must declare this. This period does not have to be continuous. The declaration must be made on the day of departure. You will then be deregistered from your address. If you declare your departure earlier, you will be deregistered on the date we receive the declaration. You must state your new address abroad with the declaration. Do you not yet have a permanent address abroad? Then provide your first residential address abroad (e.g. the address of a hotel, family or acquaintance).

Instruction text: Personal passing

Communicating in writing

To report a move abroad, send the following:

  • copy of your identification
  • a letter with your old and new addresses, the date of departure and a signature

Higlighte text: N.B. It is only possible to pass on an emigration in writing if no residents remain behind at the Dutch address.

Personal passing

If all occupants of an address are moving abroad, you must come and report the move in person. To do so, you must make an appointmentexternal-link-icon. This can be done online or by phone at 0492-378 500. All residents (including minors!) must then be present at the departure declaration. Remember to bring proof of identity and your new address.

Who can report a move?

  • everyone 16 years and older for themselves
  • cohabiting spouses/registered partners for each other (only if spouses/partners move abroad together)
  • the parent, guardian or caregiver for minor children (only if the parent, guardian or caregiver is traveling abroad with the minor children)
  • parent(s) for resident adult children (only if parents and resident children move abroad together)
  • adult children for resident parent(s) (only if they are adult resident children and parent(s) moving abroad together)
  • the trustee for a person under guardianship

Higlighte text: Declaration of departure abroad by an authorized person is not possible.

How to proceed?

Your departure abroad is automatically passed on to other government agencies and recipients of the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP).

The municipality will not send you a confirmation of departure. If you move to the Dutch Caribbean (the countries Aruba, CuraƧao and Sint Maarten and the municipalities of Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius) you will receive a free proof of deregistration. You will need this proof when registering there.

Certificate of clearance of contents

When moving to or from a foreign country, customs may ask for a clearance certificate for household effects. For this proof you need an extract from the BRP. You can apply for this at the counter of the city hall up to and including the day of declaration of departure. After that, this extract from the BRP can only be requested at one of the RNI desks.

Higlighte text: Please note that deregistering abroad may affect your housing benefit, any student loans, future benefits and your taxes.
