N279

The province, the municipalities of Meierijstad, Helmond, Laarbeek, Gemert-Bakel, Asten and Deurne, Waterboard Aa and Maas and Rijkswaterstaat are working together to make the N279 smoother, safer, smarter and future-proof.

The N279 Veghel-Asten connects residential and business locations between Veghel and Asten and in the region. The road also has a major role in keeping the Southeast Brabant region accessible and livable. To maintain the powerful position of the region, it is important to improve traffic flow and road safety on the N279 between Veghel and Asten.

Provincial Comprehensive Plan

Following the adoption of the Provincial Comprehensive Plan N279 Veghel - Asten in late 2019, several parties filed objections with the Council of State. The judge considered these objections and annulled the plan on December 15, 2021. This means that there is no longer a Provincial Comprehensive Plan and the province must again make a plan to improve the N279.

A quick scan of future traffic on the N279 was commissioned by the province of North Brabant. The quick scan shows that traffic in the region is growing more than expected according to previous figures. The purpose of the quick scan was to assess whether "repairing" the PIP with current traffic figures is possible. The conclusion is that repair is not an option and that a completely new planning process must be started. The quickscan can be found at from the website of Province of North Brabantantexternal-link-icon.

Broad interest approach

Province and municipalities are launching a so-called broad interest approach to redefine the area task around the N279. In consultation with the authorities, the scope and approach will first be determined, with support being central. Once basic agreements have been made, the (social) environment will also be involved.

Continued

Pace, diligence and commitment are important in this project that is unfortunately delayed, but it must also be feasible, sustainable and future-proof. First, the interests of the various partners and the tasks in the area on and around the provincial road are now being explored. This will not involve completely reinventing the wheel: much is already known. By the end of 2022, a plan of approach should be available to the N279 Steering Committee on the basis of this area assignment and a decision can be taken. From 2023 the plan will then be worked out in more detail, involving the surrounding area. Furthermore, the traffic study in the follow-up steps will be done with the BBMA2022 model.

In any case, everything is aimed at improving safety, livability and accessibility on and around this important traffic artery in a future-proof manner. How this will be done is still being worked out. As soon as more is known, the province will communicate about this.
