Stillborn child, declaration
Explanation
Born lifeless, pregnancy 24 weeks or longer
If your child is born lifeless after a pregnancy of 24 weeks or longer, you must file a declaration.
Born lifeless, pregnancy less than 24 weeks
If your child is born lifeless after a pregnancy shorter than 24 weeks, you choose whether to file a declaration. However, you must file a declaration if your child is buried or cremated.
Born alive, died shortly after birth
If your child died within 3 days of birth, you must report the birth and death. A certificate of birth and a certificate of death will then be drawn up.
Who may report:
- one of the parents
- someone who was present at the birth, such as a friend or family member
- hospital staff
- a mortician
When do you file a tax return?
Burial or cremation may not take place until after the declaration. Therefore, a declaration is usually made within a few days. For a child who dies within 3 days of birth, the declaration period is 3 days.
