First registration in the Netherlands in the BRP

Are you moving to the Netherlands? Dutch nationals coming from abroad, including those from the Dutch Caribbean, who are going to live in the Netherlands for at least four months during a six-month period, are required to register in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP).
Instructional text: Registration is free of charge. To register, you must make an appointment.

Bring

  • A valid form of identification (not a driver's license).

  • proof of occupancy, for example, a lease, proof of ownership, or a statement from the principal occupant of the property.

If you are in possession of relevant deeds, please also bring them:

  • A birth certificate if you were born abroad;
  • If you are (were) married: a marriage certificate, a divorce certificate or a certificate as proof that the marriage was dissolved by death. The deeds are not prerequisites for registration. The deeds can also be turned in at a later date.

  • If you come from the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba please bring proof of deregistration. Citizens from Belgium or Germany may also be asked for this.

Documents/deeds from certain countries must have a legalization or apostille. An apostille is a stamp or sticker from the court on an official document, proving that the signature on the document is genuine. With that stamp, the document is valid abroad.

How long does it take?
